Vanke Public Welfare Foundation is a national non-public foundation initiated by Vanke Enterprise Co., Ltd., approved by the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the State Council, and established in 2008 under the supervision of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. In 2017, it was recognized as a charitable organization.
The Challenge of Vanke's Carbon Reduction
As the leader of the real estate industry, Vanke Group has always been at the forefront of its peers in carbon reduction. In 2014, Vanke joined the WWF "Carbon Reduction Pioneer" project and became the first member enterprise of the "Carbon Reduction Pioneer" in the global real estate industry. In addition, Vanke Public Welfare Foundation has been implementing a five-year strategic plan since 2018, with the goal of "sustainable communities" and focusing on "community waste management". In order to achieve effective management of community waste, Vanke Group hopes to find the optimal solution for emission reduction from waste classification. Calculating the emission reduction after garbage classification is an urgent task.
But quantification is the foundation of management. Without quantification, there would be no management. Vanke Group is well versed in this, but relying solely on its own team cannot handle the vast and complex carbon accounting work. So Vanke began actively seeking external cooperation. The carbonstop, which has been deeply rooted in the field of carbon management for over a decade, quickly stood out from the candidate list of hundreds of suppliers.
Commissioned by Vanke Foundation, Carbonstop will conduct carbon reduction accounting for waste classification in Xishan Courtyard Community of Vanke Pilot Community. But garbage classification is not just about distinguishing different types of garbage, but also includes corresponding disposal methods for different types of garbage. The sorted garbage reduces the total amount of garbage that needs to be treated, and reduces the land area required for landfill and the pollutants released by incineration. Not only that, garbage classification also makes it possible to recycle garbage, and recyclable garbage will generate new products.
How to determine the accounting boundary in the face of such complex emission sources?
Solutions for carbonstop
In the Xishan Courtyard Community, Carbonstop conducted a survey on the actual amount of waste generated based on the actual situation, and based on the concept of full life cycle assessment, calculated the greenhouse gas emissions from kitchen waste biological treatment, green waste composting treatment, recyclable waste recycling and regeneration, and other waste incineration treatments. Finally, by comparing the differences between garbage classification treatment and garbage non classification unified treatment, the carbon reduction emissions of kitchen waste biological treatment, green waste composting, and garbage classification were calculated separately.
In addition, in order to enable everyone to contribute to the construction of sustainable communities. Carbonstop has developed a "Garbage Classification Carbon Calculator" mini program for Vanke, which was released on November 20, 2019 at the Community Waste Management Forum. This mini program focuses on two main themes: garbage classification and conference, and is divided into two parts: community garbage classification carbon emission reduction calculation and participation in conference carbon emission calculation. Compared to non classified garbage treatment, community garbage classification can generate a certain amount of carbon reduction. This mini program can help users calculate the carbon reduction generated by their garbage classification and treatment, and quantify their green contribution. The organization of the conference requires attendees to arrive at the designated location, and the transportation for attendees to attend, the food provided by the conference, and the energy consumption of the venue will all generate corresponding carbon emissions. The mini program can calculate the carbon emissions generated by individual participation in the conference.
Compared to non classified garbage treatment, community garbage classification treatment generates a certain amount of carbon reduction.
Under the empowerment of carbonstop, Vanke has achieved significant results in community waste classification and source reduction. Since May 2020, the three types of garbage in the community, namely recyclable waste, kitchen waste, and hazardous waste, have gone through a downward trend, while other types of garbage have also shown a downward trend. The overall composition of the four types of garbage has also shown a monthly downward trend. At the same time, the classification habits of community residents and the accuracy of garbage classification have been improving year by year, and the management of waste classification is gradually improving.
